Recommendation 116
Department Dean of Students
Consensus Opinion 4 out of 4 faculty/staff : Pro
Consensus Explanation Explanation: Increased funding in ODT and training is especially necessary now that there is less funding for sending employees to conferences and off-site training. University auxiliaries could help fund for programming so that all campus employees can participate in training and workshops.

Recommendation 116
Department Disability Resource Center
Consensus Opinion 14 out of 14 faculty/staff : With modifications
Consensus Explanation Yes, we support more staffing for ODT to provide additional training opportunities. We strongly encourage ODT partner with Foundation and ASI so that all campus employees may benefit from trainings. Will need to rely more on these services as budgets dwindle.

While ODT would be an appropriate entity to provide assessment related trainings, we are concerned that ODT is not the appropriate entity to conduct assessment oversight.

Recommendation 116
Department Enrollment Services
Consensus Opinion 2 out of 2 faculty/staff : Pro
Consensus Explanation The ODT department has made a significant difference in the quantity and quality of training on campus. With the success of the training programs over the last few years, the demand for more training has increased beyond the capability of the department to meet. With our efforts to be a learning-centered institution and our efforts to raise the quality of the services we provide, we strongly support additional funding to build on the success they have already demonstrated.

Recommendation 116
Department Parking & Transportation
Consensus Opinion 9 out of 9 faculty/staff : Pro
Consensus Explanation Parking & Transportation Services is in support of ODT as a central clearinghouse. We support an increase in funding for ODT. This plays a major role in staff development and professional growth opportunities. Many of our staff have taken advantage of the Organizational and Development opportunities already provided this year and have come back with very positive feedback. The feedback is that the courses/workshops were taught by people with excellent teaching skills and the information presented was exceptional.

Recommendation 116
Department Registrar's Office
Consensus Opinion 10 out of 10 faculty/staff : With modifications
Consensus Explanation There was agreement for increased funding to support ODT, but it is unclear what type of union ODT and the Faculty Center for Professional Development is proposed to have. There is ambiguity whether there will be one center combining ODT and the Faculty Center for Professional Development as one whole or as two entities in conjunction with one another, housed in the same facility, and combining resources. Greater Clarification is needed.

Recommendation 116
Department Student Affairs Info & Tech Services (SAITS)
Consensus Opinion 11 out of 11 faculty/staff : With modifications
Consensus Explanation All employees should receive some type of standardized training program based upon role and job function. In particular, new employees should receive basic orientation related to university policies, procedures, technology and resources. Existing faculty/staff would be encouraged to attend refresher courses and the university in general could set a training goal for employees in terms of a number of hours per year. In certain areas it would be helpful to hire dedicated trainers such as in the area of technology to handle standardized business applications/skills training on MS Office, web content, accessibility, PeopleSoft and even report writing using the campus data warehouse. It would also be helpful if there was a university level fund dedicated to supplementing department funding for faculty/staff attendance at offsite training or conferences.

Recommendation 116
Department Student Support & Equity Programs
Consensus Opinion 16 out of 18 faculty/staff : Pro
Consensus Explanation While the need for professional development and training opportunities for staff and faculty continue to increase, we have fewer funding availability to meet the needs. This recommendation provides ODT the opportunity to increase its capacity to expand existing professional development offerings and serve as the university’s main office for training programs.

Recommendation 116
Department Test Center
Consensus Opinion 3 out of 3 faculty/staff : Pro
Consensus Explanation Organizational Development & Training

This is a valuable resource, and we endorse increasing support for this program. Staff members who work in small offices, however, often find it difficult to take advantage of the offerings because of the need for office coverage. It might be useful for the ODT office to conduct a survey to determine the extent of this problem and, if necessary, to explore different methods of meeting the need (for example, workshops divided into shorter modules instead of those taking up the entire morning or entire afternoon).

Recommendation 116
Department University Housing Services
Consensus Opinion 24 out of 24 faculty/staff : With modifications
Consensus Explanation ODT has made a positive impact towards the education of staff members on campus and it could continue to grow and take training to the next level with appropriate funding. Certain staff would like to see more specific training in areas outside of the 'norm' in regards to maintenance and custodial training. Currently most of the on-campus training in these areas comes from vendors. We support this recommendation.

Recommendation 116
Department University Police
Consensus Opinion NA out of NA faculty/staff : Pro
Consensus Explanation
The University Police Department supports any effort to increase, and improve training opportunities for all university Employees. On going professional Training is mandated by the State of California for all Law Enforcement Personal. The UPD has considerable experience with supporting and providing staff development opportunities for all classifications within the department. Training is critical to ensuring that law enforcement employees remain current with the latest technology, legal issues, enforcement strategies etc. Every member of the University Police Department has an individual training plan which is designed to (1) Meet the training Standards required by the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training, (2) meet the training needs of the UPD and (3) supports the individual training and professional development needs of a staff person.

Consistent and ongoing training at the UPD has helped improve morale, encourages professional and personal growth, and provides opportunities for UPD staff to acquire additional skills that enhance their ability to serve the campus community.

Given the department’s experience with training opportunities for our staff, we believe that such opportunities should be made available to all university staff. We especially encourage the ODT to engage in the development of a structure individual training plan for all employees’ and for the ODT to assist departments with the implementation of such plans. As such, we support the allocation of additional resources to support this campus-wide improvement.
