Recommendation 42
Department Electrical and Computer Engineering
Consensus Opinion 31 out of 31 faculty/staff : Pro
Consensus Explanation ECE Department Response to Prioritization and Recovery Proposal
Approved by Department November 7, 2007

In response to proposal numbered: 42

The admission policies and enrollment management to the MSEE program have been a concern in the ECE Department for some time. Admission policies have been recently modified to be more restrictive for conditional students by requiring specific GRE scores prior to admission.
The Department recognizes the need for more proactive advising and verification of progress towards degree progression. The implementation of policies to accomplish them is under current departmental discussion.
The MSEE program is popular mainly along surrounding industry professionals. Courses and curricula are selected to cater to this population. Significant weight on decisions regarding these matters is placed on the Department Industrial Advisory Committee recommendations and on general industry state of the art trends.
The MSEE program currently offers two laboratory courses as reinforcement to the thesis and project components of the program. These labs are taught using the same outdated equipment utilized in the undergraduate programs. The Department strongly believes that increased funding is required to upgrade the equipment to existing industry standards.
We would like to point out that the MSEE program has close ties with industry as it has some common projects with some companies. Also the MSEE program serves other programs within the College of Engineering by offering classes that other MS students regularly take such as MEMS (Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems), Engineering Probability and Statistics, Numerical Methods, Stochastic Processes, Matrix Methods and Systems Theory.
