P&R Responses for recommendation 74

Recommendation 74
Department Executive Graduate Council
Consensus Opinion 8 out of 8 faculty/staff : Con
Consensus Explanation The Executive Graduate Council opposes recommendation #74 from the Academic Programs P&R to discontinue the graduate program in History.

It would be very unusual for Cal Poly Pomona to not offer this program. History is one of the most common graduate programs in the CSU with 16 other campuses offering the degree. The existence of so many programs clearly indicates that there are a large number of students interested in this kind of educational opportunity.

The program will show significant growth in enrollment a coming years. The program only started in fall 2000, so it is not surprising that the enrollment data reviewed by the P&R committee indicated a relatively small program. The program has undertaken relatively little advertising but they will be assisted with this by the new staff hired for this purpose in Admissions and Outreach. Enrollment growth will be stimulated by increased involvement with neighboring school districts.

Discontinuing the program at this time would cause the campus to lose a funded project and become ineligible for a pending grant. The History department has recently won a one million dollar grant in conjunction with the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District from the U. S. Department of Education to Teach American History Grant of over. A second three-year grant with the same objectives developed in conjunction with the Riverside Unified School District is currently pending with the U. S. Department of Education.

The University needs to grow its graduate programs and discontinuing a promising young graduate program will be counter-productive. Graduate students currently comprise only 5.8% of the students at Cal Poly Pomona. This is well below the CSU system median for the 2005-06 AY of 12%, with our campus ranking 18th out of the 21 campuses that have graduate programs.
